Chevening Alumni launch new initiative on Leadership and Governance

The Chevening Alumni Association of Uganda (CAAU) has launched a new initiative to add to the ever-increasing voices calling for a rethink of leadership and governance in Uganda.

The campaign, named ‘Shaping Leadership and Governance in Uganda’ aims to spark conversations around the state-of-affairs of leadership in the country, and how a better future can be forged.

During the media launch of the new initiative in Kampala on Thursday 5th, September, Allan Brian Ssembajjwe, the Chairperson of the Chevening Alumni Association of Uganda explained the thinking behind the new drive.

‘We cannot afford to remain silent spectators. This platform is about giving the elite Ugandans a voice using this nonpartisan platform and ensuring that we collectively shape the future of our country,’ he said.

‘The leadership and governance project will focus on fostering conversations around leadership, constitutionalism, the rule of law and good governance within Uganda’s arms of government, civil service and political arenas.’

The new campaign is led by Bruna Patricia Acam. She said the campaign will involve several stakeholders, including leaders coming through universities in the country.

‘We want to inspire the next generation of leaders of this country. The old guard is on their way out. We want to mentor young leaders to pursue excellence. We want the next leaders to value transparency, and accountability,’ she said.

The media launch was attended by several student leaders drawn from a section of universities in Uganda, among other stakeholders.

The one-year drive is funded by the Chevening Alumni Programme Fund (CAPF) and is aligned with one of the core pillars of the Chevening Award – ‘Leadership and Influence.’

Committee

This initiative is spearheaded by the 2022-2023 cohort of Chevening scholars in close cooperation with the existing Executive Committee of the association. Steering this new drive are:

  3. Edwin Wabomba (University of Glasgow)
  4. Dennis Ouma (University of Sussex)
  5. Johnson Mayamba (Africa Media Freedom Fellow, University of Westminster)
